Market Minute: Weekend Spotlight on Tesla (TSLA)

Yesterday, Tesla (TSLA) announced its long-awaited Cybercab and surprise Robovan. Elon Musk has been promising full autonomous driving for years now, and the Cybercab is a bold move towards that commitment, with no steering wheels or pedals in the design. It is expected to launch in 2027 with a price tag of around $30K, a level many analysts have been looking for on a Tesla.

Musk has promised a “next-gen” E.V. below $30K next year, but as Nicolas Mersch said on Friday’s Morning Trade Live, “part of the culture” of Tesla is “massive overpromise.” The market was disappointed, with shares of Tesla falling 8% into Friday’s close.

Ross Gerber joined Market On Close to share his thoughts. Gerber, a one-time Tesla bull, has turned negative on the name over Elon Musk’s leadership. He drives a Tesla, and compared Tesla’s FSD service to Waymo’s, calling Waymo’s far superior. He called watching over the FSD “worse than teaching a 15-year-old to drive.” He loves the idea of the Robovan but doesn’t expect it within the next decade.

“I know this company better than anybody,” he said, “whatever they say is two or three years later.” He called the capabilities and tech Tesla showed off at “We, Robot” “disingenuous.” He also called Musk the “anti-advertiser” for Tesla because his politics are at odds with his customer base. Even for Teslas he liked, such as the Cybertruck, he believes have limited demographic. Watch the full interview below on Schwab Network.
