Market Minute: Alphabet Near All-Time Highs Ahead of Earnings

After a volatile week in which the upstart A.I. DeepSeek roiled markets, traders now have an especially heavy earnings week to assess. This column will focus on the biggest name in terms of market cap; Alphabet (GOOGL), boasting a colossal ~$2.5 trillion valuation, will release its quarterly results during Tuesday, Feb. 4’s postmarket. But also watch out for Amazon (AMZN), Palantir (PLTR), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Disney (DIS), PepsiCo (PEP), Eli Lilly (LLY), Merck (MRK), and many more major names throughout the week.
A member of the celebrated Magnificent 7 stocks, Alphabet enjoys a level of competitive dominance not often seen in the business world as it accounts for 89.6% of internet search traffic, according to Statista. Zacks consensus estimates for earnings per share come in at $2.12 vs. $1.64 (+29.2%) last year, with revenue of $81.38B vs. $72.32B last year (+12.5%).
Like many other tech- and A.I.-related names, Alphabet (technically a member of the Communication sector) saw its shares take a hit at the start of last week with price opening down -4.19%. But the tide quickly turned, with shares reclaiming all that lost ground and even more as price shot up into all-time highs on Friday. Recent price action has been choppy as it traded roughly around a volume node near 192, but the general trajectory of higher lows has remained. The area near 192 is also the location of the previous highs from July, so this could be an area to watch. Meanwhile, price topped out for the day on Friday near the yearly +1 Standard Deviation Channel, which could be another resistance point to consider.
The options market reveals additional information about potentially key price levels. Next week’s Feb. 7 expiration, which will capture earnings, showed greater overall Open Interest on the Call side during Friday’s session with notable strikes heavily concentrated between 200 to 220; particularly at the 215 (7.6K), 205 (6.5K), and 210 (6.3K) strikes. The Put side shows the highest readings at 170 (5.7K), 195 (5.1K), and 165 (4.6K).
